East coast
The east coast is divided into several regions due to the island’s shape. These include the regions of Matemwe and Kiwengwa, the more well-known areas around Paje and Jambiani, and Michamwi Kae. Here on the east coast, you’ll find the “real,” relaxed Zanzibar, where the “barefoot luxury” atmosphere is truly embraced.
The natural spectacle: ebb and flow
Das ist der markanteste Unterschied zum Norden und zu den Malediven:
The tides: At low tide, the sea recedes up to 2 kilometers along the east coast. The water disappears almost completely, right up to the edge of the reef.
The experience: What some see as a disadvantage (you can’t always swim) is actually an attraction. At low tide, you can walk for miles on the hard sand, watch local women harvesting seaweed, and discover small marine creatures in the tidal pools.
Colors: When the tide comes back, the water shimmers in a neon turquoise that makes even the Maldives look pale because the sand here is extremely white.
