Seaweed Jambiani

Jambiani

Jambiani: authentic Zanzibar

While places like Nungwi are more influenced by traditional tourism, Jambiani has remained a vibrant fishing village where the daily life of the locals takes place right outside your hotel door.

Unlike in resort areas, the hotels in Jambiani are often small and integrated into the village.

In Jambiani, the sea recedes for kilometers at low tide – further than almost anywhere else on the island.

Advantage: The lagoon is extremely shallow and safe. There are hardly any sea urchins here compared to other sections.

Interesting: When the water recedes, the seabed becomes a “highway”. Locals cycle across the wet sand, children play football, and you can walk out for ages (be sure to use sunscreen!).

For those interested, a guided “Village Tour” is highly recommended. You’ll visit the school, the herbalist, and see how the traditional dhow boats are built without a single metal nail, using only wood and rope.

Seaweed Farming

Jambiani is a center of seaweed cultivation in Zanzibar. At low tide, you can see hundreds of women in colorful robes (kangas) tending their seaweed farms in the shallow water. The seaweed is cultivated on wooden poles in the sand.

Seaweed Center

There’s a social project in the village called the “Seaweed Center” where you can see how soaps, scrubs, and juices are made from these seaweeds. It makes a great souvenir that directly supports the women in the village.

Kuza Cave

Deep in the dense jungle behind the village lies Kuza Cave, a sacred limestone cave. The water inside is crystal clear, fresh (rich in minerals from the rock), and pleasantly cool. Swimming is possible.

Culture

Drumming workshops and cooking classes are often held there. For the locals, the cave is a spiritual place for offerings.

Kulinarik

In Jambiani there are many small “Local Joints” (like the famous LUKMAAN in Stone Town, but in a village-like form) where you can eat very good squid in coconut sauce or octopus curry for little money.

Kitesurfing for explorers

While neighboring Paje is a world center for kitesurfers, Jambiani is considered the more relaxed sibling.

Vibe: It’s less crowded on the water. Since the wind often blows parallel to the beach, it’s a paradise for kitesurfers, especially for those seeking a bit more peace and quiet.

Traditional sailing trip

Many traditional sailing trips depart from here or nearby Kizimkazi. You sail on a wooden dhow to sandbanks, grill fish, and can snorkel. In Jambiani, the experience often feels even more authentic, as you frequently sail with the fisherman who also uses the boat for fishing at night.
