Kendwa

Kendwa: A dream of a Beach

Kendwa is wider, more expansive, and the beach is like something out of a dream. The atmosphere is a blend of exclusive beach club vibes and relaxed island lifestyle. It’s less sleepy than the East Coast, but more elegant than the directly adjacent, more unspoiled Nungwi.

What Makes Kendwa So Special

The Tidal Wonder: First things first: In Kendwa, you can swim in the sea most of the day. The water here is deep enough that it doesn’t completely recede at low tide. It constantly shimmers in an almost unreal turquoise.

Sunset Center: Kendwa is located on the west coast, which means spectacular sunsets every evening. It’s an event that draws people to the beach with a drink to watch the sun sink directly into the sea.

What to Expect:

You won’t be bored in Kendwa, whether you’re looking for an adrenaline rush or total relaxation. Thanks to the calm waters, Kendwa is the center for all things fun on the water.

Parasailing: Soar above the bay and see the reef from above – one of the most popular spots for this on the island.

Jet Skiing & Flyboarding: For the thrill of speed on the mirror-like water.

Stand-Up Paddling (SUP): Especially at sunrise or sunset, it’s an almost meditative experience.

Excursions to Mnemba Atoll: Although Mnemba is located on the northeast coast, many of the best boat tours depart from Kendwa/Nungwi.

Snorkeling & Dolphins: You’ll travel out on a traditional dhow, snorkel in crystal-clear waters teeming with colorful fish, and have a good chance of seeing wild dolphins.

For Partygoers: The legendary Full Moon Party. But only if your vacation coincides with the full moon is Kendwa Rocks the place to be. It’s the biggest party on the island, featuring acrobats, fire dancers, and DJs. But don’t worry: The rest of the month, it’s considerably more subdued.

Quad Bike Tours
If you want to see the “real” Zanzibar, you can take guided quad bike tours into the interior from Kendwa. You’ll ride through local villages, past baobab trees, and get a glimpse into life away from the beach loungers.

Romantic Sunset Dhow Cruises
You’ll sail into the sunset on a traditional wooden boat, usually accompanied by live music (Taarab sounds) and small Swahili snacks. This is the epitome of an exotic holiday feeling.

A Little Tip for the Walk

At low tide, you can walk along the beach from Kendwa to Nungwi (approx. 20–30 minutes but be aware that on the way back you may have to leave the beach if it gets high tide). Nungwi is more lively, with more small local shops and the famous turtle sanctuary (Baraka Aquarium). This gives you the best of both worlds: the peace and luxury of Kendwa and the hustle and bustle of Nungwi.

Alternative Places

Those who prefer a quieter atmosphere should also visit the East Coast.
