Nungwi

Nungwi: The vibrant center

Located at the northernmost tip of Zanzibar, Nungwi is known for its unique geography: because the coastline bends here, it’s one of the few places on the island where you can watch both sunrise and sunset directly over the sea.

What makes Nungwi so special

There’s always something going on here. It’s a mix of fishing village and tourist hotspot. Nungwi’s greatest charm lies in its direct access to the sea. Unlike Paje, where the water recedes for kilometers, the coast in Nungwi drops off much more steeply. This means you can swim all day long in many spots, regardless of the tide. The water shimmers a deep, uniform sapphire blue and looks like a swimming pool.

Why you absolutely have to go

The most beautiful beaches: The sand in Nungwi is exceptionally white and soft, and since there are few sea urchins and seaweed near the shore, Nungwi is the best beach resort on the island.

Turtle Conservation: Here you’ll find the Mnarani Sea Turtle Sanctuary, where you can learn more about rescued sea turtles. A visit to the Baraka Aquarium, where you can swim with turtles, is also highly recommended.

Lively Atmosphere: Nungwi offers the perfect blend of honeymoon luxury and backpacker adventure.

Diving & Snorkeling: Nungwi is a gateway to the Mnemba Atoll, Zanzibar’s most famous coral reef. Observe dolphins, green sea turtles, and thousands of tropical fish. Boats depart every morning directly from Nungwi beach.

Deep-Sea Fishing: The waters off Nungwi are renowned for catching large fish (marlin, sailfish, and king mackerel).

Sunset Dhow Cruises: A must for romantics! Sail on a traditional wooden dhow with live drumming, drinks, fruit platters, and other culinary delights as the sun dips below the horizon. Also worth seeing are the dhow shipyards, where traditional wooden boats are still built by hand.

Events & Nightlife: Nungwi offers a classic holiday atmosphere with a diverse evening program.

Full Moon Party at Kendwa Rocks: Just a 5-minute taxi ride away, this party is one of the biggest in East Africa.

Beach BBQs: Many hotels host evening barbecues with seafood right on the beach, accompanied by traditional Maasai dances.

The Pub Crawl: Bars line the beach between Nungwi and Kendwa, coming to life after sunset.

Village Exploration: You can safely explore Nungwi on foot at your own pace. The people are friendly; a simple “Jambo” (hello) will open any door.

Local Tip: In the village (behind the tourist strip), you can find authentic “Urojo” soup (a Zanzibar mix) for just a few cents.

One small drawback: the “Beach Boys” (both locals and Maasai in their traditional attire). Vendors are most active in this area. Since the beach is public, they will approach you (“papasi,” as they call themselves locally).

Culinary Highlights

In Nungwi, it’s all about the catch of the day.

Seafood Paradise: Nungwi is arguably the best place to enjoy giant lobsters and spiny lobsters (clams).

Baraka Beach Restaurant: Famous for its tables right on the sand – dine with your feet in the water.

Nami: A new sushi and taco spot opened in 2026 right on the road to Stone Town. Takeaway or dine in, as you prefer.
