Taxis & Transfers in Zanzibar

How to get around the island safely and stress-free

Zanzibar is a paradise, but the local logistics can be a challenge for first-time visitors. Between dusty roads, unmarked paths, and the charming but often chaotic dala-dalas (local minibuses), the question quickly arises: What’s the best way to get from A to B?

This guide tells you everything you need to know about taxis and minibuses on the island. If you’re considering renting a car, think about whether driving on the left-hand side of the road is safe for you in hectic situations. Transfer prices are relatively moderate, in our experience.

1. The Taxi System: Negotiation vs. Fixed Price

Taxis are the main mode of transport for tourists in Zanzibar. Important to know: There are no taxi meters.

The problem: Anyone looking for a taxi at the airport or in Stone Town often ends up in drawn-out price negotiations. As a tourist without local knowledge, you’re almost guaranteed to pay a “tourist surcharge.”

One solution: We at visit-zanzibar.eu can’t guarantee you the absolute cheapest price (nobody knows that), but we can guarantee a fair fixed price. We usually confirm this immediately via WhatsApp or email when you book standard routes. For less frequently traveled routes, we’ll confirm the price after a brief consultation with our drivers – whether you’re going to Nungwi, Paje, or the airport. No haggling, no surprises.

2. Private Transfers & Minibuses: Comfort for Groups

Are you traveling with family or a group of friends? Then a private minibus (minivan) is the best choice.

Air Conditioning: The Zanzibar sun is intense. Our vehicles are equipped with modern air conditioning – a luxury you’ll truly appreciate after a long flight or a day at the beach.

Safety: Our drivers know the potholes and the intricacies of local traffic. Safety is our top priority, so you can relax, look out the window, and count the palm trees.

3. What about the Dala-Dala?

Dala-dalas are the most authentic form of transport – small, often overcrowded buses or pickup trucks.

Pros: They’re extremely cheap (just a few cents). We often use them ourselves when traveling solo with little or no luggage.

Cons: There are no fixed schedules, they’re very cramped, and it’s almost impossible with a large suitcase.

Conclusion: Great for a quick adventure, but not recommended for transferring to your accommodation with luggage. Or rather, not recommended at all, because what’s okay for me could completely ruin someone else’s start to their vacation.

4. Insider Tip: Book your transfer in advance

Arrival at Zanzibar Airport (ZNZ) can be hectic. Dozens of drivers offer their services simultaneously.

Our advice: Book your transfer online in advance. Your driver will be waiting for you with a name sign at the exit. It’s the most relaxed start to your vacation imaginable.

5. Local Use of Tuk-Tuks or Mopeds

Within town or for short distances, you can use the ubiquitous tuk-tuks or ride on the back of a moped, which is always an option in the local weather if you don’t want to ride without a helmet (which is mandatory) and bump along the sometimes unpaved side roads/paths.
